Delphi's RACam Integrated Radar-Vision System Enables Active-Safety Suites

Volvo’s 2015 XC90 features RACam, claimed to be the world’s first integrated radar and vision data-fusion system. Supplied by Delphi as the Tier 1, and on display at the upcoming 2015 SAE World Congress, RACam is designed to enable a broad array of active-safety capabilities. It combines Delphi's 76-GHz second-generation short-range radar with MobilEye’s vision-processing technology in a single, compact module. Vehicle safety system applications enabled by RACam include full-speed-range adaptive cruise control; adaptive headlamp control; traffic sign recognition; forward collision warning; pedestrian detection; and automated braking. The RACam module located between the rear-view mirror and windshield on the XC90 measures 123 x 68 x 38mm (4.8 x 2.7 x 1.5 in). Jugal Vijayvargiya, President of Delphi’s Electronics & Safety Group, claimed during the system's debut that RACam is significantly less expensive, lighter, and smaller than non-integrated radar and camera systems. Volvo aims to meet new Euro NCAP 5-star ratings with its XC90 using the RACam system.
