Several World Firsts Highlight Volvo XC90 (Video)
Volvo Cars on Aug. 26 unveiled the redesigned XC90 for the 2015 model year as part of what the company says is a $11 billion investment program that includes a new platform for the XC90 and other models called the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). The XC90’s larger hood, its new beltline, and its sharpened shoulders connecting with the tattoo-like rear lights are some of the design signatures that will be mirrored across the range. The engine is a 2.0-L 316-hp (236-kW) four-cylinder unit that is turbocharged and supercharged. The top of the range XC90 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid adds an electric motor for total power of about 400 hp (300 kW) with CO2 emissions of about 60 g/km (NEDC driving cycle). Volvo claims it is the world’s first seven-seat plug-in hybrid and also claims world firsts for two XC90 safety technologies, one for run-off-road protection and one for auto braking at intersections.
