JLG Reveals New Electric Telehandler

The battery-powered E313 is designed for emission-free and noise-sensitive environments.

JLG Industries has unveiled its first electric telehandler, the E313, designed for all-terrain and off-road use. The battery-powered E313 offers zero-emission and low-noise operation for moving materials around indoor construction, urban, residential and municipal projects.

“As jobsites evolve, machines need to evolve with them,” said John Boehme, senior product manager for telehandlers at JLG, an Oshkosh business and a global manufacturer of mobile elevating work platforms and telehandlers. “Our new E313 electric-powered telehandler transforms how work is done in emission-free spaces and noise-sensitive environments by delivering a quieter, more efficient working experience.”

With a 3,500-lb (1,588-kg) maximum lift capacity, a 13-ft, 1-in (3.99-m) maximum lift height, and 7-ft, 6-in (2.29-m) forward reach, the electric telehandler provides nearly identical performance figures as the 313 diesel-engine model (see chart). There are a few variances between the two models: the E313 is about 90 lb (41 kg) lighter at 7,340 lb (3,329 kg) and can travel at 9.3 mph (15 km/h) compared to 12.4 mph (20 km/h) for the diesel 313. Dimensions are the same for both models, including the 5-ft, 9-in (1.75-m) wheelbase and 10.0/75-15.3 tires.

An 18.6-kWh electrical system, featuring six 48V lithium-ion batteries (3.1 kWh each) with integrated battery heaters, replaces the Kubota V1505-E4B diesel engine that generates 24.8 hp (18.5 kW) in the 313 model. Up to four hours of continuous operation is possible, or extended intermittent use is available for increased productivity, especially for overnight projects.

“The intelligent battery monitoring system provides a state of charge. It also initiates a reduced-performance mode when the battery falls below 20%, reminding the operator to recharge the machine,” Boehme said during a virtual machine walkaround.

Dual 3-kW onboard battery chargers with 110V and 220V adapters offer a 2- to 3-hour charge time with 220V, or 11 to 12 hours with a 110V power source. The onboard charging system, supplied by Zivan, self-monitors available power and adapts the charging rate accordingly, Boehme said. A regenerative braking system generates power back into the batteries and minimizes brake wear.

A two-speed electric transmission offers high-speed, two-wheel drive and low-speed, four-wheel drive. Electric drive motors eliminate the need for fuel or oil and reduce maintenance. Two-wheel rear pivot power steering results in less ground disturbance compared to a skid steer’s counter-rotating steering, according to Boehme. “That is one of the reasons landscapers prefer this machine to a skid steer,” he said. “The oscillating rear axle provides a smoother ride for the operator and load.”

The new electric telehandler comes standard with a universal skid-steer coupler system, allowing it to attach to various existing telehandler and skid-steer loader attachments, including carriages, forks and buckets. An optional hydraulic universal skid-steer coupler is available. The machine also has an integrated hitch for hauling tools around the jobsite.

A standard Load Stability Indication (LSI) system senses when the machine reaches its forward load capacity and alerts the operator, mitigating the risk of accidents during load handling. “By eliminating the guesswork of handling loads, this system helps operators work with greater confidence,” Boehme said. Another safety feature is the Seatbelt Engagement and Operator Presence system, which uses visual and audible alarms and can limit machine functions if necessary.

Designers targeted easier serviceability for the E313, and its electric setup results in reduced maintenance requirements. “Batteries, chargers and charging adapters are all conveniently located in one place,” Boehme said. “The single-piece counterweight protects the batteries and other interior components of the machine.”

The machine also comes standard with ClearSky Smart Fleet, JLG’s fleet management and communication platform that allows “true” two-way fleet interactivity. Smart Fleet can be accessed through the ClearSky mobile app or a web portal.
