Ford Debuts F-600 Chassis Truck at Work Truck Show

Ford Motor Co.’s newest commercial truck, the F-600 Super Duty chassis cab, slots between the Ford F-550 and F-650. The new nameplate, which hits a “sweet spot” in the market, according to Mike Pruitt, chief program engineer for Ford Super Duty trucks (F-250 through F-600), was revealed in Indianapolis at the NTEA Work Truck Show.

“The F-600 delivers the capability of a Class 6 truck with a maximum GVWR of 22,000 pounds in that familiar Class 5 Super Duty package, so fleet customers no longer have to choose between a truck that doesn’t have enough payload or a truck that’s too big,” Pruitt said in an interview with Truck and Off-Highway Engineering.

Available for order in early 2020, the F-600 is the same size as the F-550 but with additional payload capability. The F-600 is available in gasoline and diesel powertrains with 4x2 or 4x4 drivetrains as well as an all-new 10-speed TorqShift automatic transmission with available live-drive power take-off and up to 300 lb·ft (407 N·m) of torque.

“The engine and transmission calibrations will be tailored to the F-600 application,” Pruitt said.

F-600 powerplants are an all-new Ford engineered and built 7.3-L pushrod V8, and a third-generation 6.7-L Power Stroke diesel. (For engine and transmission details, read the Ford 2020 Super Duty article here.)

Ford’s F-600 employs an upgraded driveline, brake and chassis components as well as 19.5-in tires and wheels.

“The F-600 lets the fleet customer spec the truck that they want, rather than settling for what’s available,” Pruitt said.

Deliveries of the new F-600 medium-duty truck will begin in mid-2020.
