Continental’s Latest EHorizon Platform Expands Real-Time Driver Information

Developed in partnership with IBM and location cloud company Here, the latest evolution of Continental's eHorizon software uses digital mapping and cloud-based data analytics to give drivers real-time information on dynamic events such as weather, accidents, and traffic jams. Called Dynamic eHorizon, the new system will be shown at the 2015 SAE World Congress. It “allows the vehicle to adjust to the upcoming route early on and actively reduce [fuel] consumption," said Helmut Matschi, member of the Continental Executive Board during the technology roll-out in January. It is also part of Continental’s autonomous-driving electronics platform. To provide real-time updates, the system uses data provided by sensors on other vehicles and additional sources using the Internet to effectively create a digital map. The eHorizon map data is accessed via Here’s location cloud, which analyzes the real-time data from sensors and other dynamic events and communicates this to the vehicle so it adjusts its route. Continental developed the system’s hardware and algorithms. Scania trucks in fleet use equipped with eHorizon have saved more than 16 million gallons of diesel since 2012, according to Continental.
