New Scale Technologies (Victor, NY) has introduced the SQL-1.8 SQUIGGLE piezoelectric linear motor that travels up to 7 mm per second and pushes axial loads of up to 30 grams. It measures 1.8 × 1.8 × 6 mm. New materials and thread design in the linear drive screw enable high-volume automated manufacturing. The motors feature high efficiency, force, and precision, and are used for miniature optics and imaging, surveillance, electronic locks and fasteners, micro UAVs, gun sight stabilization, and microfluidics (lab-on-a-chip pumps and valves). A patented ultrasonic motor uses less power than electromagnetic micro-motors.
