Active Label Chip

IDS Microchip AG (Wollerau SZ, Switzerland) has introduced the IDS-SL 13A smart active label chip that automatically tracks, monitors, time-stamps, and records information about any product in a supply chain on land, on the sea, or in the sky. The RFID chip can check on and record unseen changes such as extreme temperatures that can impact goods. It also can be used for electronic ticketing of packages, or tracking medical information without physical contact.

The passive/semi-passive tag chip is optimized for single-cell, battery-powered smart labels with sensor functionality. It assigns a unique identity code to whatever is labeled, and a 1.5 or 3V battery supports the integrated real-time clock and EEPROM memory to allow on-chip logging of data from the internal temperature sensor and other external sensors. It works in passive mode with no battery and without the real-time clock function. This mode is designed for applications in which a reader initiates the logging and the data is stored in the reader using an A/D converter. Access to the chip is protected through three-level password authentication.
