Rolls-Royce to Supply MTU Engines for Claas Agricultural Vehicles
Rolls-Royce and Claas recently signed a project agreement for the supply of MTU engines for use in agricultural vehicles. The MTU brand engines, which are a part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, will comply with the EU Stage V emissions standard scheduled to come into effect in 2019.
Claas will fit the new, improved MTU Series 1000 to 1500 engines to its Lexion and Tucano combine-harvesters, its Jaguar forage-harvester and its 4x4 high-horsepower tractor Xerion, according to the announcement from Rolls-Royce. MTU’s Series 1000, 1100, 1300 and 1500 are based on Daimler OM 93x and OM 47x commercial vehicle engines and cover a power range from 100 to 480 kW (134 to 643 hp). Beginning in 2019, a total of 4000 to 5000 engines are to be supplied per year across all series and emissions levels.
“With an eye, among other things, to the EU Stage V Emissions Directive, we have decided in favor of these tried-and-trusted engines from MTU to power a large proportion of our vehicles,” said Bernd Kleffmann, head of systems engineering development at Claas Selbstfahrende Erntemaschinen GmbH. “We already have over 10 field-trial vehicles fitted with EU Stage V MTU engines and are very satisfied with them.”
In addition to reducing the mass of particulate in exhaust gases, the EU Stage V regulations set to come into force in 2019 are also intended to put a limit on the number of particles. According to the announcement, the engines meet these tighter emissions limits by having an additional diesel particulate filter. Its internal design improvements are intended to reduce fuel consumption.
