The Power of Optical & Quantum Technology, Networking, & Interoperability

SPONSORED BY:

For the first time ever, leaders in the space communication and navigation community come together to discuss the technology required to build and navigate a holistic space ecosystem.

This unique summit will foster discussions surrounding new and emerging technologies, such as optical communications, radio frequency technologies, networking, quantum devices, and interoperability efforts. Sessions feature program and technical leaders from NASA centers and offices who will speak to the growing importance of developments in space communications and navigation.

10:00-10:15 am EDT: Welcome Remarks | Commercialization, Innovation, and Synergies (CIS) Overview

  • Dr. Angela Hodge | Civil and Defense Space Partnerships (CDSP) Lead, CIS, Goddard Space Flight Center

10:15-11:00 am EDT: Keynote Presentation

This session provides an overview of SCaN and ESC projects that contribute to the advancement of NASA’s strategic goals and initiatives.

  • La Vida Cooper | Deputy Program Manager of Strategic Initiatives, Exploration, and Space Communications, Goddard Space Flight Center

11:00 am-12:00 pm EDT: Panel Discussion: Emerging Technologies & Capabilities

At NASA, we stand ready to provide cross-cutting technical expertise and creative problem-solving to deliver not only high-rate, full coverage-communications services, but bold, forward-thinking solutions to advance exploration and discovery. This panel will foster discussions surrounding new and emerging technologies and is your chance to interact directly with NASA physicists, engineers, and directors working on these developments.

  • Jason Mitchell | Director, Advanced Communications & Navigation Technology Division, Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) Program Office, NASA
  • Antti Pulkkinen | Director, Heliophysics Science Division, Goddard Space Flight Center
  • Haleh Safavi | Communications Systems Engineer, Advanced Communications Capabilities for Exploration and Science Systems (ACCESS) Project, Goddard Space Flight Center
  • Ian Adams | Earth Sciences Division Technologist, Goddard Space Flight Center
  • Jack Sadleir | Quantum Physicist, Detection Branch, Goddard Space Flight Center
  • Babak Saif | Optical Physicist, Goddard Space Flight Center

Moderated by Jay Falker, Assistant Center Director for Strategy, Goddard Space Flight Center

12:00-12:20 pm EDT: Fine Steering Mirrors in Space Missions: High Precision for Challenging Environments

Fine Steering Mirrors in Space Missions: High Precision for Challenging EnvironmentsFine steering mirrors (FSM) are key components of free-space optical terminals. In combination with a gimbal-based, coarse pointing assembly, the tip-tilt devices act as FSM to optimize the link budget during pointing, acquisition, and tracking. FSM help to mitigate residual pointing errors of transmitters, as well as minimize receiver system tracking errors by compensating for atmospheric or spacecraft-induced disturbances or static misalignments like point-ahead correction. Next-generation piezo and voice-coil-based FSM have been used in ESA and NASA missions, like the Solar Orbiter Satellite, as well as in commercial programs with large-quantity demands. This session will explore implementation of these high-precision, ruggedized tip-tilt devices designed for program-specific requirements, as well as environmental challenges, launchability, thermal conditions, reliability, and SWaP demands.

  • Chris Barcheski | Business Development Manager, Space and Defense, PI USA
  • Tim Ijsselstein | Senior Technical Sales Engineer, PI GmbH

12:20-12:40 pm EDT: Solutions for Free Space Optical Satellite Links

As both space optics technology and demand for greater data bandwidth continue to grow exponentially, so too does the need for free-space optical links. This session looks at cutting-edge space-grade products and sub-systems designed to establish free space communication links between satellites. In addition, attendees will see an overview of space-grade photonic components such as LiNbO3 modulators, radiation-hardened active fibers, and 90° optical hybrids — essential components of a space-grade transceiver solution developed in partnership with Airbus Defense on an ESA project — as well as a look at fiber optic gyroscope and inertial navigation systems that can be implemented on the same satellites.

  • Yves Deiss | NORAM Sales Manager – Photonics, Exail

12:40-1:40 pm EDT: Panel Discussion: Networking & Interoperability in the Artemis Era

Artemis is the first step in the next era of human space exploration. Learn more about the lunar communications and navigation architecture that will bring networking; positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT); and science services to the Moon. In this panel discussion, you will have the opportunity to interact with NASA leaders that play a critical role in providing technical expertise and encouraging international cooperation.

  • Aaron Comis | Chief Digital Engineer, Engineering and Technology Directorate, Goddard Space Flight Center
  • Cheryl Gramling| Lunar Position, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) Lead, Goddard Space Flight Center
  • Joel Parker | Position, Navigation, and Timing Lead, Goddard Space Flight Center
  • Dan Motto | Mission Manager, Technology Enterprise and Mission Pathfinder Office, NASA

Moderated by Dave Israel, Architect, Exploration and Space Communications Projects Division, Goddard Space Flight Center

1:40-2:00 pm EDT: Closing Remarks

  • Ali Hale | Industry Engagement Lead, Goddard Space Flight Center
