12:00-12:20 pm EDT: Fine Steering Mirrors in Space Missions: High Precision for Challenging Environments

Fine Steering Mirrors in Space Missions: High Precision for Challenging EnvironmentsFine steering mirrors (FSM) are key components of free-space optical terminals. In combination with a gimbal-based, coarse pointing assembly, the tip-tilt devices act as FSM to optimize the link budget during pointing, acquisition, and tracking. FSM help to mitigate residual pointing errors of transmitters, as well as minimize receiver system tracking errors by compensating for atmospheric or spacecraft-induced disturbances or static misalignments like point-ahead correction. Next-generation piezo and voice-coil-based FSM have been used in ESA and NASA missions, like the Solar Orbiter Satellite, as well as in commercial programs with large-quantity demands. This session will explore implementation of these high-precision, ruggedized tip-tilt devices designed for program-specific requirements, as well as environmental challenges, launchability, thermal conditions, reliability, and SWaP demands.

As both space optics technology and demand for greater data bandwidth continue to grow exponentially, so too does the need for free-space optical links. This session looks at cutting-edge space-grade products and sub-systems designed to establish free space communication links between satellites. In addition, attendees will see an overview of space-grade photonic components such as LiNbO3 modulators, radiation-hardened active fibers, and 90° optical hybrids — essential components of a space-grade transceiver solution developed in partnership with Airbus Defense on an ESA project — as well as a look at fiber optic gyroscope and inertial navigation systems that can be implemented on the same satellites.
