SAE International Establishes a New AI Standards Committee at Le Bourget

SAE International announced the formation of a new artificial intelligence (AI) standards committee during the 53rd International Paris Air Show . The SAE G-34 Committee for Applied Artificial Intelligence in Aviation Systems was established to help guide safe and successful adoption of AI technologies through the development of industry consensus standards and recommended practices. With an initial focus on critical fight management systems, the committee will evaluate applications for AI usage in aviation and aerospace and will propose standards to support implementation and certification
AI is poised to transform the aerospace industry, impacting all areas in which computing and aerospace intersect. AI and machine learning is quickly becoming embedded into and transforming digital systems used to design, manufacture, operate, and maintain aerial vehicles. When these technologies are leveraged successfully, it will dramatically change how the aerospace industry operates.

“This new committee is being formed at a critical time as the public takes a hard look at the role automation and machine learning play in flight and in the wider aviation system. Formed from membership across the aerospace and aviation ecosystem, this committee will identify the best practices and will establish the standards that ensure AI can be applied and certified in a manner that achieves these criteria,” says committee chair, Mark Roboff.
