Ariane 6 has entered a higher-performance phase. On June 17, 2026, the heavy-lift rocket launched 36 Amazon Leo satellites from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana, flying in the Ariane 64 configuration with four advanced P160C solid-propellant boosters for the first time.

The Arianespace VA269 mission, designated LE-03 by Amazon, lifted off at 09:21 local time and delivered the satellites to low Earth orbit at an altitude of approximately 465 km. The mission lasted 1 hour and 51 minutes from liftoff to separation of the last satellites.

The flight was the third Ariane 6 mission supporting deployment of the Amazon Leo constellation,  the eighth Ariane 6 launch overall, and the third Ariane 6 launch of 2026. Amazon Leo is Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite network, designed to deliver fast, reliable internet to customers beyond the reach of existing networks.

“Ariane 6 has proven itself yet again, cementing its versatility as a launcher that can deliver all types of missions to all orbits, giving us more confidence and possibilities for Europe’s autonomous access to space,” said ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher. “Ariane 6 was designed from the outset to be a modular launcher – we have now seen it launch in three versions in just two years – and we are not finished, further evolutions are still to come.”

The mission also changed the payload benchmark for European launchers. With 36 satellites on board, VA269 carried four more satellites than the two previous Amazon Leo missions, VA267/LE-01 and VA268/LE-02. ESA said the launch set a new weight record for Europe and represented the most cargo taken to space in one launch by a European launcher. Arianespace said the mission enabled deployment of the heaviest payload ever launched by an Ariane launcher.

The added performance came from the debut of four boosters based on the P160C solid-propellant rocket motor. ESA said the P160C-based boosters can increase Ariane 6 performance by up to 15 percent, equivalent to an increase of 2 tonnes to low Earth orbit. The P160C adds 14 tonnes of propellant over the P120C, increasing the total propellant to 156 tonnes and adding one meter in height to 14.5 m. Despite being one meter taller, ESA said the additional height does not affect the connection to Ariane 6’s central core or the total height of the booster.

For Ariane 6, VA269 was both a performance demonstration and an early proof of the launcher’s upgrade path. Arianespace said the flight marked a new milestone in Ariane 6’s ramp-up, with the launcher undergoing its first major upgrade less than two years after its inaugural flight while maintaining its overall architecture. The company said the mission showcases Ariane 6’s ability to evolve rapidly to meet growing demand from institutional and commercial markets.

“With 100 satellites now placed in orbit by Arianespace for Amazon Leo and the launch of 4 more satellites than the first two missions, we are setting records with an increasingly powerful and versatile launcher,” said David Cavaillolès, CEO of Arianespace. “This further demonstrates our ability to address new markets, and especially constellation deployment.”

The previous European cargo record was held by Ariane 5, set in 2013 for ESA’s 20-tonne International Space Station supply mission ATV Albert Einstein. The motors that form the core of Ariane 6’s boosters are also used on ESA’s smaller rocket Vega-C, linking the upgraded Ariane 6 configuration to a broader European solid-propulsion family.
