Coreless Current Sensors
Asahi Kasei Microdevices Corporation (Fowlerville, MI) has started mass production of the CZ39 series of coreless current sensors. The CZ39 device family is particularly well-suited to EV applications due to its 100ns response time, low heat generation, and noise immunity. These properties are highly compatible with the silicon carbide- (SiC) and gallium nitride- (GaN) based power devices favored by OEMs for their reduced form factor and high efficiency. As such, the CZ39 series allows for the implementation of substantially smaller, lighter, and more accurate on-board charging systems for EVs. The CZ39 series features a high-sensitivity compound Hall element that enables a response time of 100ns, making it possible for current measurements to keep up with the high switching speed of SiC- and GaN-based power solutions. This allows OEMs to take advantage of those devices’ smaller size and thus reduce the weight of on-board charging systems in order to extend cruising range. The CZ39 series’ ability to quickly signal the system to interrupt current flow during an overcurrent condition also makes for a robust electronic fuse, or e-fuse, implementation.

Resettable Thermal Cutoff Device
Bourns, Inc. (Riverside, CA) announced its latest miniature resettable thermal cutoff (TCO) device series, also known as mini-breakers, that are designed to control abnormal, excessive current virtually instantaneously, up to rated limits. The Model NX Series offers higher current-carrying capabilities combined with a very low-profile package at a height of 0.94 mm and body width of 2.8 mm. These features make this series an ideal overtemperature and overcurrent protection solution for lithium polymer and prismatic cells in high energy density, smaller batteries such as next-generation notebook PC and tablet battery cells, as well as handheld and wearable electronics. The new series has current capabilities from 12 A to 20 A at 60 °C and is available with or without welding projections. Providing design flexibility for a wide range of application environments, these TCO devices are available with four trip temperature options of 77 °C, 82 °C, 85 °C and 90 °C — all of which operate within a ±5 °C tolerance. The Model NX Series also is designed with a high-rated corrosion resistant bimetal mechanism that delivers enhanced endurance in humid environments compared to standard TCO devices.

High-Performance Conductive Additives
Orion S.A. (Houston, TX) offers a broad range of high-performance conductive additives that improve Li-ion battery performance. Its acetylene-based PRINTEX® kappa 100 conductive additive and its new PRINTEX kappa 10 conductive black for lithium-ion batteries are exceptionally pure, highly refined and easy to process. PRINTEX kappa 100 powder or beads impart high electrical and thermal conductivity, leading to significantly higher power densities and longer battery life than with other carbon blacks. The high-performance conductive additive forms an excellent percolation network across the cathode surface for effective charging and discharging. PRINTEX kappa 100 has a low carbon footprint because Orion’s acetylene black production generates a high yield. The sustainable chemistry contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Orion recently launched PRINTEX kappa 10 to meet the surging demand from the lithium-ion battery industry. Working on both cathode and anode, the new furnace black efficiently transfers electrical energy within lithium-ion batteries. As with PRINTEX kappa 100, PRINTEX kappa 10 forms a percolating network that facilitates electron flow, enhancing performance and power response during charging and discharging.

Littelfuse, Inc. (Chicago, IL), has revealed the newest member of its eFuse Protection IC lineup, the LS0502SCD33S. This novel development introduces the Single Cell Super Capacitor Protection IC, tailored explicitly for charging backup power sources under extreme conditions, setting a new benchmark in the sector. Backup power is essential in numerous settings, but lithium-ion batteries’ limited temperature tolerance often restricts their application. In response, Littelfuse engineered the LS0502SCD33S, leveraging supercapacitor technology to deliver a solution that excels in a broad temperature range and offers superior power/energy density. A standout feature of the LS0502SCD33S is its proficiency in effortlessly managing high operational voltages (above 3 V), eliminating the necessity for intricate power management arrangements. The LS0502SCD33S protects against potential system impairments with its integrated input overvoltage and current protection mechanisms. It offers an adaptable, all-in-one, and space-efficient solution for storage capacitors or capacitor banks. Additionally, it incorporates an ideal diode for reverse blocking to maintain performance and efficiency when the input voltage drops.
