Computer-on-Module Standards

PICMG (Wakefield, MA) announced two new specifications for the high-end Computer-on-Module standard COM-HPC that target mixed-critical functional safety applications and small form factor designs requiring credit card-sized modules. Like COM Express Mini, the COM-HPC Client Mini specification will define the use of one connector instead of the two implemented for the larger modules (Sizes A -E). But with COM-HPC, half the number of signal pins still means 400 signal lanes, which equals 90% of the capacity that COM Express Type 6 modules offer. Compared to COM-HPC Client Size A modules, the smallest available COM-HPC form factor, COM-HPC Mini, also reduces the footprint to 50%. The new version of COM-HPC defines signal pinouts to support FuSa (Functional Safety) applications.

Embedded STT-MRAM

Renesas Electronics Corporation (Tokyo, Japan) announced that it has developed circuit technologies for an embedded spin-transfer torque magnetoresistive random-access memory (STT-MRAM or MRAM) test chip with fast read and write operations fabricated using a 22-nm process. The test chip includes a 32-megabit (Mbit) embedded MRAM memory cell array and achieves 5.9-nanosecond (ns) random read access at a maximum junction temperature of 150°C, and a write throughput of 5.8-megabyte-per-second (MB/s). MRAM can achieve shorter write time than flash memory because it requires no erase operation before write operation. However, further speed improvements are needed to shorten system downtime for over-the-air (OTA) updates required for endpoint devices.

Chordal Height Gage

The L.S. Starrett Co. (Athol, MA) has introduced a custom designed and manufactured Chordal Height Gage (a.k.a. DO Gage) to be used for measuring the opening heights of turbine vanes at specific locations to verify that an aircraft engine will get proper air flow. Despite its small footprint, the gage has three independent probes that are used to take measurements, including a free-floating central gage body that allows the middle probe to take accurate readings along the trailing edge, regardless of the variable contours that are often on these nozzles. The gage is built in a “Lazy-L” shape to enable linear readings to be taken perpendicular to the trailing edge of the blades, giving a dimension for the smallest opening that air can flow through. Accuracy and repeatability of the Chordal Height Gage is within 0.0005", although the indicator readouts are generally set to a 0.001" resolution per customer requirements.
