48-V System

IAV will showcase its 48-V system at the SAE 2014 World Congress April 8-10 in Detroit. The system was developed with several objectives in mind: to significantly reduce CO2 emissions; provide a cost-effective solution for use in high-volume production; minimize changes necessary to a base vehicle; ensure ideal interaction with smaller-size combustion engines; and let the consumer see the clear benefit in everyday fuel consumption. A 48-V starter/generator 10 W and a 48-V li-ion battery (560 W·h) with integrated power electronics (inverter, dc/dc converter) in monobloc design are the new system components. Benefits of the company’s system are cost-effective 48-V technology without high-voltage safety requirements, use of a reduced 12-V buffer battery (no need for 12-V start function), EMC-compliant power cabling with common shielding concept, minor installation effort , and established service concepts.
